The BMW 7-series sedan used to be the model most likely to serve as a personal limo, but starting in 2022, the X7 SUV will take over as the rich people's mobile palace. The largest Bimmer is ideal for wealthy families as it has six seats distributed across three rows and more real estate to display how pricey it is.
The X7 drives better and has a wider range of more appealing powertrains, despite the cargo area and back seats not being as large as those in competitors like the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Mercedes-Benz GLS-class. A 523-hp twin-turbo V-8 and a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six are included in the engine hierarchy, which is supported by an excellent automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
For such a huge machine, the 612-hp Alpina XB7 offers absurd levels of performance. The 2022 BMW X7 is an Editors' Choice winner because it boasts a ton of upmarket material, cutting-edge technologies, and an interior that is as quiet as a library yet cozier and ritzier, regardless of what's behind its big hood.
What has changed for 2022?
BMW only slightly modifies the X7 lineup's option packages for 2022. While upgraded Bluetooth is now required, wireless device charging is no longer, and the M50i model now has electric sunshades in place of manual ones for the second-row windows. Rear-wheel steering and the Dynamic Handling package, which includes enhanced M Sport brakes and active suspension stabilization, are no longer available separately for the xDrive40i model.
Pricing of 2022 BMW X7
With a starting MSRP of $74,900, the 2022 BMW X7 is one of the more affordable SUVs in its category. Costs increase throughout the trim ladder by several competitors in the same class. The high-performance Alpina XB7 starts at $141,300, while the intermediate X7 M50i starts at $99,800.
Which one to Purchase?
Even if we enjoy the 523 horsepower and impressive performance of the twin-turbo V-8, we would still choose the X7 xDrive40i. Four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, heated front seats, a power tailgate, and other desirable standard amenities are among its appealing features. We'd also add the Premium package, which comes with a head-up display, gesture controls, and soft-close doors, as well as one of the Vernasca leather upholstery options.
2022 BMW X7: Interior and Comfort
The X7's luxurious cabin, which draws inspiration from both the expensive 7-series and the smaller BMW X5 SUV, is well-appointed, tech-rich, and roomy. The cabin is also stocked with a ton of luxury options, such as heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and ambient interior lighting.
However, we found it frustrating how slowly the second-row captain's chair, which was powered, moved when trying to let passengers enter and exit the third row. Similarly, during lengthy rides, the way-back seats aren't particularly large for people. Nevertheless, nobody will bemoan the X7's generous interior cubby storage. Even though we could only cram three carry-on bags behind the third row, we were still able to fit 33 when all the back seats were folded down.
2022 BMW X7: Connectivity
A fully digital gauge cluster and a huge 12.3-inch touchscreen that dominates the dashboard are just a couple of the high-tech amenities that come standard on every X7. Additionally, its entertainment system may be controlled via a sizable rotary knob on the center console as well as gimmicky gesture controls.
Every model offers a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, a 10-speaker audio system, and built-in navigation. Wireless charging and a more potent Harman/Kardon sound are optional.
2022 BMW X7: Engine and Performance
The base model X7 xDrive40i has a 335-horsepower turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, while the M50i has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine with 523 horsepower. This V-8 engine has been carefully tuned to produce 612 horsepower in the Alpina XB7. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic are paired with all three engines.
The six-cylinder engine was quiet and had plenty of torque, but the V-8 engine was more endearing and had more rapid acceleration. A smooth ride is provided by its standard adaptive air suspension, especially in Comfort mode.
The X7's unfortunate propensity to lean in corners belies its generally sporty appearance. The adjustable Sport mode tightens things up a little, with sharp impacts disturbing the otherwise serene quiet inside because of the 21-inch wheels' short sidewalls. The Alpina XB7 will appeal to those who desire the strongest X7 and can afford its high asking price. The model that BMW made us maneuver around a narrow racetrack boasted astounding acceleration and displayed unexpected poise.
2022 BMW X7: Fuel Efficiency and Actual MPG
According to estimates, the six-cylinder xDrive40i can achieve up to 24 mpg on the interstate and 19 mpg in the city. However, those who prefer the V-8-powered variant and want a little bit more power will have to give up some fuel efficiency.
We don't presently have estimates for the Alpina model, however, the M50i is rated at 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. In our rigorous testing, we put the xDrive40i to the test on our 75 mph highway fuel-economy route, and we got 28 mpg. The M50i achieved 24 mpg on our actual highway test, outpacing its government rating.
