2024 BMW X7 Review: Specs and Pricing

2024 BMW X7

Overview

The 2024 BMW X7 has sparked mixed reactions due to its distinctive split-headlight design, but for those who can overlook this feature, it stands out as the top full-size luxury SUV on the market, earning a 2024 Editors' Choice award. Although the X7's starting price of nearly $83,000 may be steep, it's a worthy investment for affluent families seeking superior performance. However, it's important to note that the X7 does not offer vast cargo space or a spacious third row. Instead, it excels in delivering the best handling in its class and features outstanding engines, from the smooth 375-hp straight-six to the powerful 630-hp twin-turbo V-8 found in the luxurious Alpina XB7. Every model comes with all-wheel drive and standard air suspension, providing a smooth, cloud-like ride that enhances the cabin's tranquility. The 2024 X7 also boasts cutting-edge features and premium materials, ensuring it surpasses expectations. Experience the pinnacle of luxury and performance with the 2024 BMW X7.

What has Changed for 2024?

Following a refresh in the previous model year, the 2024 BMW X7 sees no major changes. However, there are some notable updates: newly optional "Crystal" headlights and an illuminated kidney grille enhance its exterior appeal. Additionally, the Driving Assistant Professional package now features Highway Assistant, a semi-autonomous drive mode enabling hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph on compatible highways.

2024 BMW X7: Competitors

The BMW X7 faces stiff competition from the Mercedes-Benz GLS, its closest rival. While the GLS may lag slightly in terms of design, it compensates with a more spacious interior, which may appeal to certain buyers. Additionally, there are the truck-based American large SUVs, namely the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade, which surpass both German rivals in terms of cargo room and towing capacity. However, for those who prioritize other factors over maximizing interior space, such as performance and luxury, the X7 remains a compelling choice. For a comprehensive analysis of the details, refer to our test team's Expert Rating below.

2024 BMW X7: Engine and Performance

The entry-level 2024 BMW X7 xDrive40i is powered by a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine, while the M60i features a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 producing 523 horsepower. The Alpina XB7 takes it up a notch with a specially tuned version of the V-8, delivering 630 horsepower. All models come equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. In performance tests, the M60i achieved 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, with the xDrive40i close behind at 4.6 seconds. Each X7 rides on air suspension with adaptive dampers, and can be further enhanced with optional rear-axle steering and active anti-roll bars, both standard on the sportier M60i. Handling is remarkably agile for a large SUV, with precise and well-weighted steering. The X7 comes with wheels starting at 21 inches, with 23-inch options available for the first time, though the larger wheels slightly compromise ride quality.

2024 BMW X7: Interior and Comfort

How's the Interior? Inside, the 2024 BMW X7 features a striking dashboard dominated by a massive, slightly curved digital display. This includes a 12.3-inch gauge cluster for the driver and a 14.9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The interior is laden with luxury, offering heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and ambient interior lighting. Despite these high-end touches, the slow-moving power-operated second-row captain's chairs can be frustrating when accessing the third row. Additionally, the third-row seats are not particularly spacious for adults on longer journeys. However, the X7 excels in interior storage, fitting three carry-on suitcases behind the third row and up to 33 with all the back seats stowed.

2024 BMW X7: Connectivity

How's the Tech? The 2024 BMW X7's iDrive infotainment system is accessed through a 14.9-inch touchscreen embedded in a curved glass panel atop the dashboard. The system can also be controlled using a large rotary knob on the center console, as well as gesture controls, which tend to be more gimmicky than practical. Standard features include a Wi-Fi hotspot (subscription required) and BMW's Digital Key, which allows remote control of vehicle functions via a smartphone app. Optional upgrades include a more powerful Harman/Kardon stereo system and wireless charging.

2024 BMW X7: Pricing

The 2024 BMW X7's price ranges from $82,895 to $150,395, depending on the chosen trim and available options.

Which one To purchase?

Despite our appreciation for the twin-turbo V-8's power and impressive performance, we recommend the X7 xDrive40i. It comes with a range of desirable standard features such as four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, heated front seats, and a power tailgate. For added luxury, we suggest opting for one of the Vernasca leather upholstery choices and the Premium package, which includes a head-up display, gesture controls, and soft-close doors.
