Overview
"Meet the futuristic 2024 Tesla Cybertruck – a vehicle that appears straight out of sci-fi yet packs a serious punch against traditional pickup trucks. Crafted with a robust stainless-steel body, it boasts claimed bulletproofing, exuding a rugged charm. Offering two all-wheel-drive options: a 600-hp Dual Motor variant and the formidable Beast model, sporting three electric motors for a combined 834 horsepower. Expected to join the lineup in 2025 is a single-motor rear-wheel-drive version. Tesla promises impressive towing capabilities of up to 11,000 pounds and an estimated driving range of 340 miles. Charging up at a Tesla Supercharger can reportedly add between 128 and 136 miles in just 15 minutes.
What has Changed for 2024?
Tesla is entering the highly competitive pickup truck market, a popular segment in the United States. Its newest addition, the Cybertruck, will face tough competition from established players like the Ford F-150 Lightning, the GMC Hummer EV, and the Rivian R1T from the get-go. Additionally, Chevrolet is set to launch its electric Silverado, while the Ram 1500 REV is nearing its initial production date. This underscores the intense rivalry and dynamic landscape in the electric pickup truck sector.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck: EV Motor and Performance
The Cybertruck will offer three different powertrain configurations, catering to varying preferences. Initially, dual- and tri-motor models with all-wheel drive will be available, with a rear-wheel-drive single-motor model slated to join the lineup in 2025. The Cybertruck Dual Motor model boasts a combined 600 horsepower, while those seeking top-notch performance can opt for the Cybertruck Beast, which features three motors delivering a combined 834 horsepower. Equipped with adjustable air suspension, all Cybertrucks can dynamically raise or lower their ride height and offer up to 17 inches of ground clearance. Coupled with an impressive 35-degree approach and 28-degree departure angles, the Cybertruck promises to excel as an off-road vehicle. Despite its size, the Cybertruck exhibits surprising agility on the road. In our test drive of the Founders Edition Beast model, we found its rear-wheel steering and variable ratio steer-by-wire system facilitated smoother maneuvering in urban settings compared to conventional pickup trucks.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck: Battery Life, Charging, and Range
The Tesla Cybertruck Beast is equipped with a 123.0-kWh battery, which we believe is shared with the Dual Motor model. According to Tesla's claims, the Dual Motor model can add 136 miles of range in just 15 minutes when connected to a Supercharger, while the tri-motor model can add 128 miles in the same timeframe. In our testing, we found that it took approximately 50 minutes to charge the Beast's battery from 10 to 50 percent. The driving range of the electric truck varies depending on the number of motors, with Tesla estimating that Dual Motor versions can travel up to 340 miles per charge, while the Cybertruck Beast can achieve approximately 301 miles. These estimates increase to over 440 and 470 miles, respectively, with the addition of an optional range-extender battery pack that fits inside the truck's cargo bed. When the rear-wheel-drive Cybertruck arrives, it is expected to offer an estimated range of 250 miles. During our testing of a Beast model without the range extender battery on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, it achieved a result of 250 miles.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck: 0–60-MPH
The 600-horsepower dual-motor Cybertruck is anticipated to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, boasting a top speed of 112 mph. Although we haven't conducted testing on this specific model yet, we have had the opportunity to test the 834-horsepower tri-motor Beast variant. Impressively, it reached 60 mph in a mere 2.6 seconds during our testing, making it the fastest truck—and the fourth-fastest electric vehicle—we've ever tested. Furthermore, it completed the quarter-mile in 11.0 seconds at 119 mph. Interestingly, both of these test results align perfectly with Tesla's claims, highlighting the remarkable performance capabilities of the Cybertruck.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck: Capacity for Towing and Payload
Both the dual- and tri-motor Cybertrucks boast an impressive maximum towing capacity of 11,000 pounds, setting a high standard in the pickup truck market. Meanwhile, the upcoming single-motor model will offer slightly lower towing capabilities, capped at 7500 pounds. Additionally, every Cybertruck is equipped to handle cargo with ease, featuring a six-by-four-foot composite cargo bed capable of hauling up to 2500 pounds. These towing and hauling capabilities further enhance the versatility and utility of the Cybertruck lineup.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck: Interior and Comfort
Fans of the minimalist interior design of the Tesla Model 3 will experience a similar reaction when they encounter the spartan cabin of the Cybertruck. Despite the truck's dramatically sloped roofline, rear-seat headroom is surprisingly generous, although taller passengers may still find it a bit snug. During our testing, we discovered that the front trunk (frunk) of the Cybertruck accommodates just one carry-on suitcase, while the interior can hold up to 22 suitcases with the rear seats folded up. With a cargo bed offering 121 cubic feet of volume, the Cybertruck provides ample space for hauling. Additionally, a hidden storage compartment beneath the bed's floor can accommodate an additional carry-on suitcase, further enhancing the truck's utility and storage options.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck: Connectivity
Each Cybertruck comes equipped with a prominent 18.5-inch touchscreen prominently positioned in the center of the dashboard, offering intuitive access to various vehicle functions and features. Additionally, rear-seat passengers are catered to with a 9.4-inch touchscreen located on the back of the center console, providing entertainment and control options. SiriusXM satellite radio and a Wi-Fi hotspot are included as standard features, enhancing the driving experience with access to a wide range of entertainment options and connectivity on the go. However, it's worth noting that Tesla models, including the Cybertruck, do not support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which may disappoint some drivers. Despite this, Tesla has promised several features for the Cybertruck that have yet to be activated, such as controls for locking front and rear differentials and additional controls for the truck's air suspension. These features are expected to be enabled through future over-the-air updates, demonstrating Tesla's commitment to continually enhancing and refining its vehicles' capabilities.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck: Pricing
