2022 RAM Pickup 1500 Review: Specs and Pricing

2022 RAM Pickup 1500

Overview

Pickups come with a range of skills, but the 2022 Ram 1500 is substantially nicer than other half-ton trucks, therefore it has more skills than most. Even while the entry-level vehicles lack the luxurious materials and upmarket features of the more expensive trims, they nonetheless ride better than their more expensive rivals because of their more advanced suspension, which can be made cushier with the use of the optional air springs.

Additionally, Ram offers 1500 with a split-folding tailgate, a huge 12.0-inch touchscreen, and storage spaces incorporated into the cargo bed. Its lineup of engines includes a 395-hp Hemi V-8 (with or without hybrid assistance) and an environmentally friendly diesel six-cylinder with 480 pound-feet of torque.

All of these engines are connected to a smooth automatic transmission. The strongest setup has a 12,750-pound towing capacity. The Ram 1500 won't be mistaken for anything other than a truck, of course, but the fact that it may pass for a luxury car is what makes it unique and what gets it an Editors' Choice award.

What has changed for 2022?

Ram increases the selection of ways customers can purchase its half-ton pickup for 2022. A sporty G/T package for the Laramie and Rebel, a hardy BackCountry Edition, and an even more opulent variation of the top-tier Limited called the 10th Anniversary Edition are among the new additions to the portfolio.

A cold-air intake, distinctive exhaust system, paddle shifters, and a console-mounted shifter distinguish the G/T. The BackCountry Edition is essentially an off-road-oriented package for the Big Horn and Lone Star vehicles, which are valued for their affordability. The 10th Anniversary Edition further elevates the Limited model with even more luxurious interior finishes, a Blue Shade paint color only offered, and unique badging inside and out.

Which one to Purchase?

Even though the 702-hp Ram 1500 TRX (reviewed separately) makes the Rebel less desirable, we still believe it to be the half-ton Ram to purchase. We would choose the crew cab with four-wheel drive and prefer the V-8 over the basic V-6 due to its increased power and seductive rumble.

Due to the air suspension's adjustable ride height, we would also pick it. Given that it only works with the Level 1 or Level 2 package, we believe that the latter's remote start, 115-volt outlet, front and rear parking sensors, power-adjustable pedals, passive hands-free entry, and other features make it the one to get.

Additionally, we would choose the 33-gallon gasoline tank, which will require fewer fill-ups on long drives than the conventional 26-gallon tank. Bedliner The Safety and Convenience package, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high lights, and lane-keeping assistance, and the Multi-function Tailgate, which also includes a Bedliner spray, is the only further option we'd advise.

2022 RAM Pickup 1500: Interior and Comfort

The Ram 1500's interior features enormous passenger capacity and cubby storage that is incredibly functional. The Ram seems more like a luxury car than a pickup truck in higher trim levels thanks to the addition of expensive materials and creature comforts.

The most expensive models have superior leather surfaces and real wood accents. Still, the majority of cars are capable of having upmarket options like heated and ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof.

The crew cab of the Ram 1500 is incredibly roomy, as it is with most full-size pickup trucks. Additionally, it boasts an unusual split-folding tailgate and a tonne of inside storage. There are two available cargo beds, measuring five feet seven inches and six feet four inches, but the expanded Quad Cab only goes with the longer one.

2022 RAM Pickup 1500: Pricing

Starting MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price): ranged from $38,985 for the base Tradesman to $85,885 for the high-performance TRX, reaching over $100,000 with options.

2022 RAM Pickup 1500: Engine and Performance

Its numerous trim levels include V-6 and V-8 gasoline engines that all go well with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 48-volt hybrid system supports both engines, however, the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is also available without electric assistance. We've driven a few vehicles with the latter and were impressed by the engine's quick acceleration and baritone exhaust note.

We've also driven Rams equipped with the 3.0-liter Eco-diesel diesel V-6, which produces greater torque than comparable diesel engines on the half-ton Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra (480 pound-feet). Although the diesel-powered six-cylinder is slower than the Hemi, it is more refined and offers higher fuel efficiency.

The tough Rebel model offers a beefier appearance and true off-road prowess for those who like to explore. Every Ram 1500 features an outstanding ride thanks to a rear suspension that, in contrast to the conventional leaf-spring configuration found on domestic rivals, uses basic coil springs or optional air springs. Even models with changeable ride heights help with fuel efficiency and off-road capability. These models come with air suspension. It also offers calm cruising and secure stops thanks to its light steering and powerful brakes.

2022 RAM Pickup 1500: Capacity for Towing and Payload

The Ram 1500 has a payload capacity of up to 2320 pounds and a towing capacity of up to 12,750 pounds. Except for the Ford F-150, which can already haul more than 13,000 pounds, it has a higher maximum towing capability. Rams with crew cabs, like the Rebel model, can tow more than 11,500 pounds even if they can't haul as much as extended Quad Cab models.

2022 RAM Pickup 1500: Fuel Efficiency and MPG

The Ram 1500 series offers various fuel economy levels thanks to its hybridized V-6 and V-8 engines as well as a diesel alternative. The most efficient V-6 Ram is predicted to achieve up to 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the motorway, while the V-8 model is predicted to achieve up to 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The government predicts that Rams driven by diesel engines will achieve up to 22 cities and 32 highway mpg; all-wheel drive will result in somewhat lower mileage. On our 75 mph real-world fuel-economy route, which is a part of our rigorous testing process, the Rebel we evaluated obtained a 24 mpg highway. This is 4 mpg more than the non-hybrid V-8 Laramie we drove and 6 mpg more than the gas-only V-8 Rebel we tested. hybridized.

2022 RAM Pickup 1500: Connectivity

Ram pickups have had among the greatest connection and entertainment options in their class for a while now. Except for the base Ram model, the newest trucks maintain this trend with a snappy 8.4-inch or enormous optional 12.0-inch touchscreen. It's a shame that the large display had numerous issues during our 40,000-mile long-term test. Numerous power outlets, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a mobile hotspot are among the features of the systems. Fortunately, physical knobs and hard buttons complement touch points on even the largest screens.
